Topic Description

Effective water and wastewater/sanitation management are critical for sustainable economic development, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Access to safe water and sanitation services improves public health, reduces healthcare costs, and enhances productivity. Beyond domestic use, the availability of water is essential for agriculture, which employs a large portion of the population and supports food security. Industries also depend on consistent water supply for operations, innovation, and growth. On the other hand, proper wastewater treatment protects ecosystems and ensures water resources are available for domestic and agricultural uses, industrial processes, and energy production. With climate change intensifying water scarcity and flooding, resilient and efficient management systems are vital for adaptation. Investing in these sectors fosters long-term economic stability, social equity, and environmental sustainability.

Against this background, I am excited to moderate the most important breakout session, which is tackling the question “How can the African-German Collaboration drive innovation in the transformation of water and wastewater management”.
